Patients who know they have 20 minutes remaining will often wait 20 minutes even when they have already been waiting 30. Patients who have been waiting 30 minutes with no information and are unable to determine whether 5 or 50 more minutes remain will frequently leave at the 30-minute mark because the uncertainty is itself intolerable. The difference between these two patients is not the wait time — it is the information.
